Shóna is a gifted teenage fiddle player from Donegal who has become disillusioned by the trad scene, after years of being coached by her domineering mother to win prizes at folk music competitions, turning it into a family business. But her outlook begins to change when she meets an anarchic troupe of travelling musicians, and she and her younger brother Mickey decide to join them as they tour around Ireland’s rural landscapes. Led by the charismatic Harky, who believes mobile phones are capitalist nonsense, the group live in the moment enjoying music for its ability to bring people together and keep Irish culture alive. For Shóna, this becomes a journey of self-discovery, romance and musical expression, reconnecting with her passion while also re-evaluating what making a living as an artist entails for different people. Part road movie, part coming-of-age story, this is a joyful film about the value of tradition and the need to sometimes deviate from it.
