This documentary chronicles the high-stakes 1999 quest to achieve the last great aviation milestone of the 20th century: completing the first nonstop, unassisted circumnavigation of the Earth in a hot-air balloon. After two failed attempts in 1997 and 1998, Swiss psychiatrist and explorer Bertrand Piccard joins up with British flight instructor and technical engineer Brian Jones to launch Breitling Orbiter 3, a state-of-the-art hot air balloon that they believe will cement their place in aviation history. Blending archival cabin footage shot during the flight with modern interviews, this nerve-shredding film balances human endeavour against the scientific, meteorological, and logistical mechanics of extreme ballooning.
