Sofia has put her university studies on hold to care for her cantankerous mother Rose, whose mysterious illness means she uses a wheelchair and suffers from fits of debilitating pain. Hoping for a cure, the pair travel to a sunny Spanish resort to visit Dr Gómez, a doctor whose unconventional methods involve probing at Rose’s psyche. Meanwhile Sofia begins to question the roles she and her mum have been trapped in for years. While at the beach she meets Ingrid, a confident and free-spirited traveller, and their growing intimacy opens up a different way of living for Sofia. However, feelings of resentment and co-dependence between mother and daughter begin to boil dangerously over. Adapted from Deborah Levy’s novel, this simmering psychological drama explores desire, identity, and the pressures on young carers, asking what it takes to break away from generational trauma.
