Effi O Blaenau

Synopsis

Effi is a fierce but adrift young woman trapped in a cycle of unemployment and binge drinking in her rural Welsh town. During one of her weekend adventures in the nearest city, she goes home with Lee, a handsome young soldier, for a one-night-stand but forms an unexpected connection with him. However, Lee proceeds to ghost her for weeks after their meeting and, before long, Effi finds out she is pregnant. With no clear future laid out, for either herself or her unborn child, Effi is faced with new responsibilities and must make important decisions for the first time in her young life. This Welsh-language portrait of working-class womanhood is a sensitive and often harrowing story that touches upon themes of maturity, social inequality and resilience.  

Film allows us to explore complicated emotions and find connection in our shared stories. To help educators and students prepare for this viewing, we would like them to be aware that the film contains strong language, scenes of a sexual nature, and distressing scenes involving pregnancy and baby loss.
