It’s 1989 and Scottish actor Ian Charleson, best known for the Oscar-winning 1981 film Chariots of Fire, is unexpectedly offered the lead role in a production of ‘Hamlet’ at London’s National Theatre. This comes at a troubled time, as he has recently found out that he has HIV. Despite his declining health and his doctor’s warnings, he throws himself into rehearsals, determined to make the role his own. Hamlet’s questions about life, death and courage inevitably begin to resonate with Ian’s private struggle. But with the support of his friends, fellow cast members and a wider community living through the AIDS crisis, Ian pushes through his illness while pursuing the work that gives him purpose. Based on a true story, this moving drama offers thoughtful reflection on living life on one’s own terms, as well an alternative reading of Shakespeare’s masterpiece.
