In 1932 young British student Hugh Legat, along with his German friends Paul and Lena, celebrates his graduation from Oxford University, promising Paul that he will visit him in Munich someday soon. Six years later, Europe is on the brink of war, with Adolf Hitler looking to seize territorial control of Czechoslovakia, and Hugh is working as Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's private secretary whilst Paul is employed as a translator in the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. When the two old friends meet for the first time in years, they realise they may be able to prevent a catastrophic war but must also confront the complexities of their own personal relationship, left in ruins by Paul’s previous support of the Nazi Party. Adapted from the Robert Harris novel of the same name, this fictional but highly detailed film takes place during a fraught period of European history that would come to define the twentieth century.
