Episode one: Demons Unleashed (60 mins)
After the Conservatives win a surprise majority at the 2015 General Election, Prime Minister David Cameron follows through on his promise to give the British people a say on the future of the nation’s relationship with the European Union. As the war in Syria creates a migrant crisis throughout Europe, the Vote Leave campaign devises a strategy based on immigration. UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage realises that this is the moment his career has been building towards, while other senior figures across the political spectrum must determine whether they are to campaign for Remain or Leave. Most significantly of all is the decision of Boris Johnson, whose rivalry with Cameron has existed since attending Eton together.
Episode two: Out of Control (60 mins)
Boris makes his decision and backs the Vote Leave campaign, with some accusing him of doing so cynically to further his political prospects. US President Barack Obama conducts a visit to the UK and implores the British public to remain in the EU, but there is a worry within the Remain camp that their message is seen as coming from the establishment and isn’t cutting through. Meanwhile, the splintered Leave campaign produce controversial campaign materials around a “take back control” message, including the infamous £350m-a-week Brexit bus. MP Jo Cox is tragically murdered, leading some to wonder whether they have stoked up divisive rhetoric, and the referendum result comes in.
