The temperature in Connecticut in winter has fallen to well below freezing - and as family relations begin to splinter in this wealthy suburb, it's not much warmer indoors either. While the bored adults are either caught up in affairs, drinking heavily or shoplifting, they notice that their adolescent kids are beginning to follow the same escape routes. For all its sadness though, these are loveable characters, and the story flashes with dark humour.
This powerful drama about a couple's divorce and bitter custody battle over their son won an Oscar for Best Film in 1979.
