This movie about the horrifying tsunami of 2004, shows us some pretty good performances and some stunning special effects. Some of the elements of this film are good but some are frankly tedious.
When a middle class English family take a holiday in a luxury beach resort in Thailand, the tsunami strikes and they are separated. This movie shows quite a lot more of Naomi Watts, and in my opinion, not enough of Ewan McGregor. Both are good but I think that Ewan McGregor is a fine actor and I would've liked to see more of him.
I found the fact that hundreds of poor Thai people were killed, and if they weren't killed, but they were wounded and their homes were destroyed, they had nowhere to go to. A rich middle class family can hop along home, have the best treatment, and be fine. All the natives, were stuck. I found this nagging at me throughout the film.
I adore the style of this film, and the gritty, dark, muddy colors. I feel that this contrasts with the beginning of the movie, were all is bright and the colors pop. This represented the hard emotional core throughout. The scene after the tsunami had touched down and it cuts out to just seeing the dark muddy water and the muffled sound, a really interesting effect.
I won't deny that Naomi Watts was pretty good and you could related to her in the situation. But again, I wanted to see more of Ewan McGregor, his scenes felt rushed and not as important.
This film did look quite good in cinema but on the small screen, I doubt it would have the same effect. This film did not make me sad in itself, but thinking about all the people who did die or lost their houses and loved ones, made me sad.
