Costume Designer Sandy Powell at the Into Film Festival

At this year's Into Film Festival, we were very lucky to be joined by award-winning Costume Designer Sandy Powell, who lead a 45 minute Q&A session with young people. Held at the legendary Shepperton Studios, the event revealed many insights into the fascinating world of costume design to a lucky group of aspiring young filmmakers.

In the video above, Sandy gives her expert insights into the industry and offers her advice to young people looking to follow in her footsteps, and spoke of her firm belief in the power of film as an educational tool.

Sandy Powell OBE is a British costume designer, and over the course of her career has been nominated for numerous awards, including 3 Academy Award wins in Best Costume Design for the films Shakespeare in LoveThe Aviator, and The Young Victoria

She has also designed costumes for films such as CinderellaHugo and Gangs of New York, and has just finished working on Wonderstruck, based on another book by Hugo author Brian Selznick. Sandy is currently working on Mary Poppins Returns alongside Chicago director Rob Marshall.

I really enjoy doing Q&As, especially with young people. I find that I learn a lot, surprisingly. I think the questions that young people ask are much more interesting.
