Yorgos Lanthimos directs The Favourite, an awards-tipped period piece about Queen Anne's relationship with two women in the early 18th century. Though she occupies the throne in name, her ill health means that Queen Anne's close friend, Lady Sarah, effectively governs the country in her stead. With England at war with the French, Queen Anne's volatile temper and a new servant of aristocratic roots seeking to charm her way into the monarch's affections, a comedic power struggle ensues.

Born in New York, 1933, she was one of only nine women in a class of approximately 550 when graduating Harvard Law School, and her subsequent career saw her focus on issues around gender discrimination, disparity and inequality at a time when the all-male Supreme Court was reluctant to address such cases.
