Research and Impact

At Into Film, we offer comprehensive information, guidance and support on careers in the screen industries for 11-18 year-olds.

This includes our Careers and Progression programme - supported by the British Film Institute (BFI) awarding National Lottery good cause funding - which provides Continuing Professional Development (CPD), classroom resources and online content for careers professionals, educators and young people.

We also talk to young people directly about screen industry careers through our Get Into Film social media channels and a dedicated section of the Into Film website which hosts a wealth of industry insights, guidance and support.

Work experience forms an important component of our programme and includes the Northern Ireland Screen-funded ScreenWorks and Trailblaze programmes.

Our impact on the future workforce

ScreenWorks, our Northern Ireland based screen careers programme offers young people aged 14-19 the opportunity to learn more about job roles in the craft and technical disciplines of the screen industries in Northern Ireland through 3- to 5-day work experiences delivered by professionals working in that industry sector.

A survey of 1,557 young people who have taken part in ScreenSkills found that:

• On completing the programme, 86% of young people had a good understanding of how to start a career in the creative industries   
• 96% of participants stated that they were likely to pursue a career in the creative industries after completing the course 
• 87% of participants were aware of the progression routes into the Northern Ireland screen industries and how best to navigate them 
• 89% of young people stated they had benefited from advice from industry professionals towards career development in the screen industries
• 82% of young people benefited from direct contact with industry professionals.

In a questionnaire with past participants of ScreenWorks: 

• 41% have gone on to study a screen related discipline in either further or higher education, with 34% also developing their own independent creative work
• 74% indicated that they are currently pursuing a career in the screen industries, with 13% of those currently employed in the sector
• 74% stated that the ScreenWorks programme helped them to decide to pursue a career in the screen industries.
