Synopsis

When ruthless teen mobster Pinkie Brown learns that evidence of a murder he's committed has fallen into a young waitress's hands, he thinks nothing of seducing her to keep her quiet - but how long before others in their faded seaside town start talking? Starring an impressive British cast, this is the second big-screen adaptation of Graham Greene's classic noir novel. While John Boulting's 1947 version (a classic in its own right) retained Greene's 1930s setting, here director Rowan Joffe fast forwards the action to an explosive 1960s gangland, making for an intriguing twist on the original.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
