Elio is a musically gifted, intellectually precocious 17 year-old enjoying a hazy summer with his family in northern Italy during the 1980s. When his academic father hires Oliver, a handsome doctoral student as a research assistant, Elio finds himself becoming increasingly infatuated with the older man. Gradually, a passionate relationship develops between the pair, setting a romance in motion that will alter both of their lives forever. This film is an acclaimed, delicate coming-of-age drama about first love, and how people can be mature and sophisticated in some aspects of their lives, but remain innocently naïve around matters of the heart.
