Based on the stage musical, itself based on the 19th century play of the same name, this tale of romance and longing is set in 17th century Paris at a time of war between France and Spain. Soldier Cyrano de Bergerac is a talented poet who impresses audiences with his witty and sharp wordplay. He is madly in love with his childhood friend Roxanne but is self-conscious of his appearance and is convinced she would not return his affection. He hopelessly looks on as Roxanne is pursued by the cruel Duke De Guiche, whose proposal she rejects, and as she falls in love at first sight with the sweet but inarticulate Christian. Just wanting to see Roxanne happy, Cyrano agrees to help Christian express his feelings and ghost-write a series of letters. With musical numbers and strong performances from its leads, Cyrano is an entertaining tragedy which also discusses stereotypes and self-image.
