Synopsis

Benji and David Kaplan are adult cousins who were once close when they were growing up. Together they’ve decided to use the money left by their grandmother to embark on a heritage tour of Poland where she lived until forced to flee during World War II. Seeking to connect with both their shared family history and each other, their contrasting personalities nonetheless spark several disagreements. Benji is free-spirited and outspoken while David is more reserved, and when they meet the rest of the tour participants – led by a knowledgeable guide from Yorkshire – further friction is caused. Together the group visits several historical sites, including a concentration camp, before the cousins depart to seek out the house their grandmother grew up in. ‘A Real Pain’ is a funny, moving, and provocative drama which explores the ethics of how we engage with history and travel.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
