In 1959 Paris, a group of young, fiercely rebellious critics-turned-filmmakers set out to change traditional cinema forever. This irreverent historical drama chronicles the chaotic, brilliant, and deeply unpredictable daily reality behind the shooting of maverick filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard’s revolutionary debut feature, Breathless (À bout de souffle), a production that did not always go to plan. At the centre of the production are lead actors Jean-Paul Belmondo, an amateur boxer playing a petty criminal, and Jean Seberg, an American starlet increasingly bewildered and frustrated by Godard’s refusal to follow professional filmmaking etiquette. Shot in crisp black-and-white, mirroring the visuals, editing and overall tone of the very film that it is about, Nouvelle Vague is a frantic journey through filmmaking passion, and a reminder of how a singular idea can create the ripple effect that changes an artistic medium forever.
