In 1957, a group of Danish explorers somewhere in the Arctic Circle stumble upon a gravely injured man, Baron Victor Frankenstein, and bring him aboard their ship. After being attacked by a huge creature with seemingly superhuman strength who demands Victor’s surrender, we see how this creature came to be from Victor’s point of view. During Victor’s childhood, he is overlooked by his abusive father and, after losing his mother, seeks to find a way to overcome death. His controversial experiments around reanimating corpses see Victor expelled from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, yet he remains undeterred. Victor brings his creation to life and attempts to teach him about the world, but soon becomes frustrated at The Creature’s deficiencies. As The Creature is left to fend for itself, we see the remainder of the story through his eyes, where he encounters new friends and foes as he roams the land. Guillermo del Toro’s fresh interpretation of Mary Sheley’s classic gothic horror brings the source material to life for modern audiences, from the extravagant set design to the empathetic representation of otherness.
