Knives Out (2019)

Knives Out was a film that I was particularly excited to watch as I’m a very enthusiastic murder mystery lover, and when watching the trailer I felt that there was clearly some built up anticipation and tension.

The plot of the movie was; Harlan Thrombey (a wealthy, older man who has lots of family) was celebrating his birthday when he was found dead that same evening. The family are brought in and questioned by the renowned detective Benoit Blanc, who tries throughout the film to decipher this mystery, if it even is a mystery…

We learn that what seems explainable is often more complex, and secrecy is not an option.

This plot I thought was very original and to my surprise, we supposedly knew all the events of that night within the first 30minutes of the film, which meant most of the movie about watching how the events after the death impacted what happened. And I thought the use of red herrings in this film felt very confusing but it was satisfactory at the end reveal. The film was always too obvious to be predictable but not obvious enough to give anything away, which was really clever direction.

The scene of the Thrombey’s house uplifts the suspense due to this eerie and huge setting which also represents gothic motifs. Yet the simple interview process did annoy me, although we were finding out more about the film and the characters, it felt too simple and didn’t exactly build suspense apart from when we saw backstory. But apart from that this was a film I really enjoyed and did not expect such a jaw dropping ending from, and I would also definitely recommend it as the second movie is coming out soon.
