Synopsis

During Jerusalem’s British Mandate era, there was a cinema that sat right on the seam line between the Jewish and Arab parts of the city. ‘Cinema Rex’ reimagines the friction and possibilities of this shared space through the innocent eyes of the projectionist’s son. The young Mouize explores with awe his father’s projection booth, which also attracts the curiosity of a young girl, Ranin. While she only speaks Arabic and he only speaks Hebrew, cinema is a language that they both understand, and they soon find themselves caught up in the excitement of the moving pictures. With playful ‘Cinema Paradiso’ references about the beauty of cinema spaces, this animation explores the joys of friendship and the ability of children to see through the animosity of civil conflict.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
