Based on a serialized novel by the French writer Honoré de Balzac, this period drama is a cautionary tale about greed and fake news, set in 19th century Paris. Lucien, a young poet of humble origins, dreams of dazzling French society with his disarming literary skills. But having moved to the city, he discovers that his verses fail to impress those who matter. He awkwardly tries to navigate the influential social circles frequented by his lover, a married aristocratic woman, but again finds himself to be inept. To make ends meet, he takes on a job writing for a newspaper and discovers a path to fame and fortune through the not-so-noble arts of slander, scandal, and bribery. This lavish French-language film draws irresistible parallels with contemporary concerns about the integrity of the media and political corruption.
