In 1981, a low-key boxing club in Sheffield is run by a much-liked Irish trainer named Brendan Ingle. When Naz and his older brothers turn up looking to learn how to fight because of the racial discrimination and bullying they’ve been subject to, Brendan agrees to teach them. As his skills quickly develop over the coming years, Naz is keen to prove himself in the ring with a professional bout and, despite his size and slender frame, surprises everyone in attendance by winning. Further opportunities arise on the back of this victory, and it becomes clear to those around him that he has the potential to do special things in the ring. But as his name and fame become more prominent, Brendan’s family worry that – as has happened previously – higher-profile promoters may poach Naz away. As well as chronicling the sporting achievements of a modern British great, ‘Giant’ also examines the relationship between identity and fame.
