Our featured new-in-cinema title this week is Skate Kitchen, an acclaimed independent drama which sees Camille, an 18 year-old from Long Island, befriend a group of skater girls in downtown New York over a summer. Camille finds community, support and fun among the crew, as they balance part-time jobs with partying and skating in this joyful film which features non-professional actors and depicts teenage life authentically.

The Gospel According to André; Black '47; Night School

Elsewhere, the life and work of celebrated fashion writer André Leon Talley - former editor of American Vogue - is put under the microscope in documentary The Gospel According to André; a soldier seeks vengeance on the people who inflicted suffering upon his countrymen after returning home during the worst year of the Irish Famine in action-drama Black '47; and a salesman must attend adult night classes to secure the qualification required for a new job in self-improvement comedy Night School.

The Breadwinner

Our featured DVD release this week is the film adaptation of the best-selling novel by Deborah Ellis, Cartoon Saloon's animation, The Breadwinner. Set in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan in 2001, Parvana is an 11 year-old girl who helps her father in the marketplace who enjoys telling stories to his daughter. When he's unjustly arrested and imprisoned, however, she must use her initiative to dress as a boy so that she can continue to work and bring home food and water for her family, as well as looking for her father, dreaming of setting him free as she becomes a storyteller of her own.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Our other new DVD release this week is sci-fi caper Solo: A Star Wars Story, following the early years adventures of Han Solo and his trusty sidekick Chewbacca. The duo embark on a dangerous journey into a criminal underworld, and run into the notorious smuggler Lando Calrissian who allows our heroes to borrow the iconic Millennium Falcon.
