Respect is a value that underpins all of the work we do. Film works through collaboration, community, and understanding - mutual respect for each other is integral in making it such an important medium and tool for learning.

Our summer term theme is Respect, and we’ll be encouraging you to celebrate it in three different ways.

Respect for each other will play an important role in the theme, closely tied to Refugee Week (20-26 June). Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of arts, cultural, and educational events designed to celebrate the contribution of refugees, and to encourage better understanding between communities - our assembly resource on Cultural Perspectives is a good gateway into this topic. . Also this year, the Olympic games return, with the eyes of the world focused on Rio De Janeiro between 5-21 August. Respect is one of the core Olympic values, and this has been reflected in cinema numerous times, with titles such as Town Of Runners, Cool Runnings, and Chariots of Fire.

To coincide with World Earth Day (April 22) and World Environment Day (June 5), we’ll be suggesting films and resources that encourage respect for the environment, allowing you to start the conversation around climate change with your students.

We’ll also be using the Respect theme to continue our commitment to fostering respect for intellectual property amongst our users, tying in with World IP Day on April 26. Film is a creative industry, one that is built on the incredibly skilled and artistic work of hundreds of people. Through educating the next generation about this, we can ensure that as an artform film continues to thrive.
